British Columbia combines a 7% provincial sales tax exemption on solar equipment, some of the lowest baseline electricity rates in Canada from BC Hydro, and rates that have still been rising, roughly 3.75% in April 2025 and again in April 2026, which is changing the math for commercial facilities that used to assume cheap hydro power made solar unnecessary.
The province is also mid-transition on its export compensation rules. As of July 1, 2026, BC Hydro replaced its old net metering rate with a flat 10¢/kWh self-generation export rate, which means systems should now be sized closer to a facility's actual self-consumption rather than for maximum export, and it makes pairing solar with battery storage more valuable than it was under the old banking rules. FortisBC territory, covering parts of the Interior including the Kelowna area, still runs 1:1 retail-rate net metering credits separately from BC Hydro.
